shh-LIFE is closing down..
Wednesday, 03 December 2008
Heya folks,

As many of you know, I've been fighting phishers on this site for a year or so now.  Unfortunately, I don't have much time to keep fighting, or to really even keep this site running in it's current incarnation.  I'm going to be closing http://jonhandhisdog.com within the next few weeks & moving all the posts that I can over to my new site, http://jasonschleifer.com/blog.

I'm hoping that reverting to wordpress with all the latest in spam fighting technology will allow me to keep my blog running, and will hopefully allow me to actually post more frequently.

I'm also going to be closing down the jonhandhisdog forums.  I really don't have the time to focus on it at all, and I feel like I'm doing you all a major disservice by letting it slide.   If anyone is interested in maintaing the forum, I'll happily host it on my new site.  I just don't have time to administer it anymore.

If you're interested in continuing jonhandhisdog on the new site, let me know.. otherwise, I'll try and archive everything so people can still find the answers they need on it.

I'll post a note on jonhandhisdog when it's taken down completely and when everything is up and running cleanly on the new site.

Peace and love, ya'll! :)

Wow.. updates galore!
Thursday, 13 March 2008
Sorry it's been so long since an update.. a LOT of stuff has been going on!

First of all, some great news.. our son Tobin was born on Feb 29th (that's right.. a leap year baby!).  He and mum are both doing well, just feeding, pooping, and all that jazz (as babies do).

toby

The other exciting news is that I've received a promotion.. I'm now Head of Character Animation for the next film to be produced by PDI/Dreamworks!    I can't say any more about the project other than I'm SUPER excited to be heading up the show.. we've got an incredibly talented team of animators here at PDI, and I'm really jazzed about seeing what we can do with the material.

Actually, my first day as HOCA (head of character animation) was yesterday.. and I showed up to my new office to find it completely toilet papered.

tpoffice

How rad is that?   I've saved the toilet paper, since you never know when you're going to need a 2 foot sphere of comfort.

Anyway, I appologize if I've missed any emails or failed to respond to anything.. I'll be trying to go back through my pile of mails to respond, but if you need a quick response, please email me again.

cheers!

11 Second Club!
Wednesday, 12 December 2007
Some of you may remember a website called 10 second club which has been around for a few years as a great testing-ground for animators. The concept was brilliant.. every month post a sound file and then let animators try and do their best to come up with the most unique and entertaining animation for that audio.

Unfortunately, 10secondclub is no more.. but fortunately, some excellent friends have opened up 11 second club (it's one better!) which is basically the same thing, except this time it's hosted by AnimationMentor.com!

11secondclub
Animation Mentor has provided a completely rad prize for the winner each month.. an official eCritique from a real animation mentor!  That's right.. it's a chance for the winner to get a critique just like the ones that we give students at the school.. but not only that, everyone can see the critique and learn from it!

What I love about this is that it gives the animator a great tool to improve themselves, and it also gives everyone a chance to see what an eCritique actually looks like.

The first critique was done by the famous Victor Navone, a hugely awesome person and animator who is just so talented it almost hurts.

The second critique was done by yours truly.. a very fun experience & I hope that Kevin (the november winner) finds it useful & informative!

Anyway, go check out 11secondclub.com and enjoy the experience!

Jonhandhisdog.com to be moving..
Sunday, 02 December 2007
I just wanted to update everyone on what I've been slowly working on for the past few months.  As many of you know, this site has had it's ups and downs.. unfortunately, due to the policies of powweb.com (my current provider), we've run into a number of database issues over the past few years that have caused the site to go down or run sub-par.  things like their databases getting overloaded.. them just suddenly changing the name of the server w/out telling me (causing the site to go on the fritz), or many other things.

Because of that, and because of a few other features I've been wanting to implement on the site, I've been looking at alternatives to powweb AND to joomla (the current CMS I'm using).

I've decided on drupal for a few reasons..

drupal
first, it's a high class content management system.

second, it contains a forum, blog, and page management system.. integrating all the things I think are important for this site.  Joomla doesn't have an integrated forum.. so I have to bridge with SMF.

third, it has all the blog api functionality that allows me to easily post to the site from places like flickr.. joomla doesn't have that (at least, the version I have doesn't).

fourth, it has integrated tagging throughout the site.. so I can have tags for the forum, for the blog, for pages.. ALL of it integrated together so if you're looking for information on Maya (for example), you can click on the Maya tag and it'll find all the forum posts, blog posts, or whatever that are associated with that tag.

fifth, I've been able to copy over all the previous blog posts AND forum posts.. so we don't loose any information!

sixth, I'm just sick and tired of how slow it is to post on my joomla site.  it drives me bonkers.

So there you go.. I'm basically just waiting for drupal 6.0 to have it's official release (they're on beta 3 right now), and I'll make the switch.    When drupal 6.0 is released, I'll get everything transfered over to the new site (new http address, as well as new host!), and then post a message on this board pointing everyone to the new address.  I think in the long run it's going to be a much better site once everything is moved over.  support will be better.. it'll be easier to get information about the rigging DVDs, and the site won't be up and down so often!

Thanks to everyone for sticking with the pain on this site.. it'll be better soon, I promise!

peace!
